The performance consists of ritualistic auto-burials based on the hypothesis that those who die are buried horizontally, but those who change should be buried in other spatial formats. Starting from the intention to try and merge with Piccardthof, Lily seeks to be enveloped by the space, entering into a meditative state to become one with the garden. Unproductiveness and impracticality are central concerns in Lily’s art practice and these series of performances embrace counterintuitiveness and laborious actions that are, ultimately, in vain. An effort to prove that a constant and gentle crushing pressure can also be comforting, and even relaxing. The Earth wants to open up and swallow you too. When you're addicted to both shame and attention, you might be kept warm by a burning red-hot flush even when the ground that envelops you is cold. It’s always a better idea to self-inflict discomfort before it has the chance to crop up from an external source. Nothing compares to the deeply gratifying feeling of complete helplessness, because there are no responsibilities left to exercise - it becomes unnecessary to worry and feel inadequate. At 28th of February they started their travel performance&nbsp;A WAY, a challenging foot &nbsp;journey of 1187 km, from Groningen (NL) to Stockholm (SE), in which findings, experiences, activities are recorded in a variety of ways in their own artistic form. It is a physical commentary and a reflection on the consumer society with all its excesses and the relationship to it. Stichting SIGN, November 11, 2022, - January 8, 2023 EXTESTINES consists of two conceptual blueprints, which each explore the theme of making our innards into ‘outards’. Despite being a crucial element in our continued existence, the physicality of our mushy internal organs remain grotesque and alienating to us. Guts are disgusting, regardless of the fact they facilitate intricate and crucial processes such as digestion, respiration, and excretion with an efficiency that is as yet unmatched by our industrial society. Photos by Jedidja Smalbil URINATION SYSTEM URINATION SYSTEM demonstrates a circular system, wherein a subject sits on a toilet, above which a large tank of water, fed continuously by the mains water supply, is suspended. Through a narrow tube, the subject drinks water at a slow but consistent pace. It takes roughly 5-10 minutes for water to be digested, after which water will be expelled via urination at a similarly consistent pace, minus the liquid which was absorbed by the body. The body becomes a water transport pipe, and the intestines are fully saturated with liquid at every stage. The work is inspired by sphere eversion as first described by the mathematician Stephen Smale in 1957, wherein proof was discovered that a sphere could be turned inside out without creasing or making a whole in the surface of the sphere. The body cavity of the fish will be considered the ‘inside’. Once the salmon is inside-out, everyone in Sign Gallery, Groningen, The Netherlands, and the world will, strictly speaking, now be inside the salmon. It consists of two containers made up of two transparent plastic cones each, with two smaller containers in between. A pump sends the water back up to the beginning of the structure. It serves to challenge our anthropocentric relationship to natural resources such as water, and question binary logic that is attached to concepts such as 'cleanliness'. At what point is the water safe to use? The effect of this animacy hierarchy spills into politics, and exposes the anthropocentric standpoint from which we gauge the abilities of things to act upon other things. Assessing the affect of our surroundings by relating it to strictly human-centric qualities, such as utility, marketability, and potential of exploitation, has drastic ramifications on the environment and the progression of (Western) society. DISSEMINATE circulates water, our most vital commodity, through filtering substrates. The water passes through a series of filtering and un-filtering substrates, which ambiguously sterilize and reintroduce particles and contaminants. The final chamber consists of a wave machine, which emulates the sea and serves to churn up the resulting sediment so that it may be pumped back up to start the process anew. The apparatus illustrates the ambivalence of a natural phenomenon, the water cycle, to anthropocentric perceptions of utility and non-utility. collaboration with Martina Priehodova, for Maydays 2021.&nbsp; Utoprocessing is a mixed media exhibition, combining sculpture, installation, film, sound, painting, and photography, in collaboration with two students from the Conservatory: Julius Jonker and Robert IJserinkhuijsen. Our project explores hydrofeminism, and the ways in which transhumanism can be reconciled in the feminine body. Using the analogy of the body as a body of water to deepen and be mindful of the interrelations between ourselves and the world around us. Water is the fundamental link between us, our bodies, other living things, the past and the present, and our environment. We relate this to transhumanism (the integration of organisms and technology), and technological systems through water cooling methods, such as that used by a PC. Pipes and tubes run through our bodies like fibre optic cables under the sea; carrying data from one component to another, cleansing and cooling the system, and merging all parts into one comprehensive working unit.
